Most dogs and cats are considered to be Senior when they are 7 years old. I have to be honest, most of the 7yo dogs and cats that we see have been so well cared for that they don’t really appear senior but still we do know that this is the time to start looking for signs of disease more regularly.
For that reason we see them twice yearly past this age - once at the annual check-up (when they are likely to have their vaccines) and another time 6 months later. Each time they will have a full examination and we will use our Health Report Card to communicate and track our findings.
Once animals hit the 10 year old mark we consider them to be Geriatrics. Really, we probably need new classifications because again most of the pets we are seeing at this age have nothing Geriatric about them. It is from this age that 6 monthly blood testing is recommended in addition to the wellness health check.
