Caring for Pets,
It’s our way of life.

We believe in guiding you and your pet to happier, healthier and more fulfilled lives together.

Preventative health is not just injections and wormers.

Annual or biannual health checks are when we look for subtle signs of illness or pain so your pet will live a long happier life.

It is when we can empower you to meet your pets needs and make your relationship the best it can be.

Collaboration and communication.

That’s what we believe in. That’s how we work.

We have simple, online booking available to make it easy for your pet to stay healthy.

Free Puppy and Kitten Checks

Congratulations on your new fur baby! Thank you for choosing us to protect and care for your new family member!

We highly recommend scheduling their first visit ASAP. There are a number of reasons for this:

1) We would like to cuddle and make a fuss over them!!! Believe it or not, this is not just for our benefit. During this young age making positive associations with being at the vet is really important and teaches pets that going to the vet really isn’t that bad.

2) The first few months are a critical period in development. A thorough health check over will help us give you the support and tools necessary to help your new pet grow into a well-mannered, happy and healthy little individual.

3) A new pet is a responsibility for life! There is a lot to do in the first few months of pet ownership in particular. We need to establish a time table to make sure that you meet all their needs. We want to answer any questions you may have and set you up with the best and most current pet ownership information.

Vaccination

Vaccinating your pet sets them up with an immunity against diseases that can be found in the dog and cat population:

Routine Dog Vaccinations  Routine Cat Vaccinations
C3 (canine parvovirus, canine distemper virus, infectious hepatitis)  F3 (feline panleukopaenia virus, feline herpes virus and feline calici virus)
C2 (Parainfluenza and Bordatella bronchiseptica)  FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) **particularly for cats spending any time outdoors**

Vaccination is so important but it must also be balanced against the need for socialisation. We use an age-based vaccination program that provides earlier protection than others meaning you can get your puppy out and about earlier in life.

Microchipping

Microchips save pet lives.

Sadly, we haven’t unlocked the Dr Doolittle power of pet language just yet! This means if your little one gets lost, we can’t ask them who their family is and where they live. Microchips give us a way to contact you when they are found so we can get them back home!

We use the smallest chips on the market which means they are less painful to implant.

Desexing

The decision about whether to and when to desex is an important one for every pet guardian.

For cat’s it’s usually straight forward we almost always do it between 5 and 6 months. That is not only because it is best for their health but also by this time many little boy cats are starting to get on the nose while the girls can be driven so wild by their raging libido that life becomes miserable for everyone in their household!

Dogs are a little more complex as recent research has uncovered that for some pets there are good reasons to wait a little while longer.

When we are making this decision with you we evaluate a few things including:

Your personal feelings about the process

  • Your lifestyle
  • Your home environment
  • The breed of your pet.
  • The temperament of your pet.
  • Any health conditions or predispositions.

We typically have this discussion at your pet’s 6 month adolescent health check😊

Annual Health Checks

Wellness check-ups are important prior to administering vaccinations. They can also help reassure you that your dog or cat is healthy or allow us to detect hidden diseases early which can improve the outcome of many conditions, keeping medical costs down and helping your pet live longer and happier lives.

Check out our Health Report Card to see the system we follow to ensure that each examination is thorough and that our findings are clearly communicated to you.

Senior Health Checks

Most dogs and cats are considered to be Senior when they are 7 years old. I have to be honest, most of the 7yo dogs and cats that we see have been so well cared for that they don’t really appear senior but still we do know that this is the time to start looking for signs of disease more regularly.

For that reason we see them twice yearly past this age – once at the annual check-up (when they are likely to have their vaccines) and another time 6 months later. Each time they will have a full examination and we will use our Health Report Card to communicate and track our findings.

Once animals hit the 10 year old mark we consider them to be Geriatrics. Really, we probably need new classifications because again most of the pets we are seeing at this age have nothing Geriatric about them. It is from this age that 6 monthly blood testing is recommended in addition to the wellness health check.

Grooming & Nail Trimming

We will be the first to confess that we are not stylists so if it’s a full clip and style that your pet needs then we can recommend some amazing groomers.

What we specialise in is removing matted fur, ‘lion clips’ for those cats who are prone to hair balls or matting, hygiene clips, nail trims and expression of anal glands.

Many pets find grooming very stressful. We believe in a fear free environment and handling, therefore we do not condone restraining a frightened animal just to get the job done. Doing so would be unkind and exacerbate the existing anxiety.

If your pet is a Nervous Nelly, we can arrange some ‘situation anti-anxiety medication’ to help desensitise them to the process😊.

Free Nurse Dental Checks

Our nurses are well trained in dental health and disease – they can help you to maintain your pet’s dental health through diet choices and toothbrushing technique. They can also tell you when a scale and polish is necessary or refer you to one of our Vets if they identify more serious pathology.

Dental disease is such a common problem for our pets, it is something we see and treat every day. Aside from pain, dental disease also leads to heart, kidney, liver, skin and gastrointestinal tract problems.

Prevention is better than a cure…also cheaper! So, take advantage of our nurses generosity and get your pets teeth checked:)
